In class today (May 30th) we honored Tatsuo Shimbuku’s passing in 1975 at the age of 66. In his honor Ik Kyus and above performed Sansu Kata at the start and end of class. I found this to be a touching rememberence for the man that created the Isshuin Ryu style of karate.
SanSu Kata is the only Isshin Ryu style kata was incorporates the best moves of all the ShorinRyu and GojuRyu Katas that he learned when he studied under Chotoku Kyan Sensei, Chojun Miyagi Sensei. He also incorporated Kubudo moves from Choki Motobu Sensei.
I find that studying and understanding the history of Karate is very important to a student’s martial arts education. It is part of the basics in my humble opinion.
